Easy Solutions For a Stressful Dissertation Writing Process

Ideally you want to spend the bulk of your time working and writing your thesis. This may be good for your academic career goals but it can be bad for your physical and mental health. So to help counter the stress you can encounter, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Typing

Make sure your computer and chair are set up properly so you are not putting undue stress on your arms, shoulder and neck. Learn to type without having to look down at the keyboard as this will greatly reduce the stress on your neck. Also, try to limit the stretches of tine that you are sitting and typing. Take breaks often- even a five minute break every hour can help reduce muscle aches and eye strains and reduce the occurrences of headaches and other issues associated with long stretches at the computer.

Exercise

Try to to sacrifice your physical activity fort eh sake of having one more hour each day to write your thesis. Being active is important. It will help improve your mood, give you energy, and it can be a welcomed break from the monotony of staring at the computer screen and pouring over notes and text books.

Food

Eating and drinking are also important. Even if you do have to have long sessions at the computer you need to remember to eat and drink. Starving yourself will make you irritable, distracted, and forgetful. And becoming dehydrated because you forget to drink enough can also cause major problems. Snacking while you work can help but you still need to make sure you get enough real food into your system during the day.

Drugs

Thesis writers often turn to stimulants to help get them through the long and stressful process. The occasional cup of coffee in the morning or an energy drink now and then is normal and really doesn't hurt. However, you want to avoid overdoing it. Too much caffeine and stimulants can cause major problems, especially down the road if the day comes when you cannot get your normal dose and are suddenly going through withdraws.

People

Do not take for granted the people in your life who can offer encouragement and motivation. Do not forget your friends and make sure you take the time now and then to enjoy a night with friends or a get together for lunch. Likewise do not take it personally if friends and family cannot fully understand or appreciate what you are going through. You will have that one person you can turn to and that is what will help you get through those hard days of thesis writing.
